Inspiring Inclusion in Real Estate: Reflections on International Women’s Day

This week, we were thrilled to join forces with our friends at Trium Environmental Consulting and M3 Consulting to host a late afternoon of networking and an expert panel discussion including GIA leading ladies Brónágh McGivern and Danielle McGill centred around this year’s theme – ‘Inspire Inclusion’. With a focus on our sector, the event aimed to delve into pressing issues and foster dialogue on creating a more diverse and inclusive industry landscape.

  • Breaking Down Barriers: Widening Access to Real Estate

One of the key topics of discussion was the persistent barriers to entry in our industry and the imperative to widen access. We pondered over the steps our businesses and the industry at large are taking to engage with a younger and more diverse audience.

GIAs involvement in initiatives like Access Aspiration underscores our commitment to nurturing talent from all backgrounds. Through activities like Business Insight Days, Mock Interviews, and Work Experience opportunities, we strive to provide visibility and support for young individuals from underrepresented backgrounds who are navigating their career pathways.

Additionally, our sponsorship of students through the Higher Education without Barriers fund at Northumbria University and our participation in careers fairs at universities including Nottingham Trent and Salford exemplify our efforts to break down barriers and offer opportunities for diverse talent to thrive.

  • Combatting Inappropriate Attitudes: Fostering Confidence and Accountability

Addressing the prevalence of inappropriate attitudes and behaviours in our industry, the panel explored strategies to instil confidence in individuals to call out such behaviours. Leadership and training for all levels, increased emotional intelligence, and seeking third-party guidance were identified as crucial steps in tackling ingrained biases.

Drawing inspiration from leaders like Antonia Belcher OBE, we emphasised the importance of setting a strong example from the top down and fostering clear communication with those starting out in their careers to ensure they feel respected and empowered in the workplace.

  • Developing Inclusive Cultures: Aspirations for the Future

Looking ahead, the conversation shifted towards envisioning practices that companies in the industry can adopt to cultivate more inclusive cultures by the next International Women’s Day. Suggestions ranged from continued engagement with young people to promote transparency about career pathways, to advocating for policies that support diverse experiences such as Menopause support, Endometriosis awareness, and Shared Parental Leave.

Moreover, there was a shared aspiration to encourage and support the next generation to network and engage with peers across various demographics, fostering a culture of collaboration and inclusivity.

As we commemorate International Women’s Day and reflect on the strides made towards inclusivity in real estate, let’s continue to champion diversity, equity, and inclusion in our industry. By embracing diverse perspectives and fostering an environment of respect and empowerment, we can truly inspire inclusion and drive positive change for the future of real estate.
