The Shard – The Inquiry that shaped the icon

In February 2026, GIA hosted a special event in London exploring the story behind one of the capital’s most significant planning battles: the Shard inquiry. We are delighted that 50 Shades of Planning recorded the discussion, making it available for a wider audience to enjoy.

The evening offered a rare behind-the-scenes perspective on a landmark planning case, examining the key issues at stake, the moments that defined the inquiry, and the practical lessons that continue to resonate with those delivering complex, high-profile development projects today.

Hosted by Lorenzo Pandolfi and Simone Pagani, the conversation featured Chris Katkowski KC and Russell Harris KC, two of the country’s most respected planning barristers. Drawing on their first-hand involvement, they reflected on the personalities, arguments and strategic decisions that shaped the inquiry and ultimately influenced the future of one of London’s most iconic buildings.

Their discussion provides a fascinating insight into the realities of major planning inquiries, the challenges of operating under intense public scrutiny, and the enduring lessons that can be applied to contemporary planning and development projects.
