Reflecting on Black History Month

This October, we came together at GIA to celebrate Black History Month.  Throughout the month, our offices were filled with the sounds of Black excellence – a carefully curated playlist celebrating music of Black origin from the 1950s to the present day.  Our weekly “Drinks Trolley” took on a special twist with a Rum Punch, a nod to Caribbean heritage, with proceeds going to black community-led initiatives. And for a one-off special lunch, our teams came together to enjoy a BHM-inspired menu cooked by colleagues including jerk chicken, macaroni cheese, Jamaican patties and more – sharing not just food, but stories, culture, and connection.

Some movie recommendations include ‘Sinners’ by Ryan Coogler. It depicts the strength of community as well as the underlying racial politics of Mississippi in 1932. The scene where Miles Caton sings ‘I Lied to You’ is a must-watch. Another film recommended is ‘Hidden Figures’, based on the true story of three Black women working for NASA in the 1960s. It showcases their intelligence, resilience, and perseverance in a racially segregated workplace – a powerful reminder of the importance of representation and equality.

Leoni Daniel, HR Officer at GIA, said:

“It’s important for companies like GIA to celebrate Black History Month because we have a diverse workforce that deserves to be recognised”.

At GIA, diversity is one of our greatest strengths. By honouring Black History Month, we demonstrate our commitment to equity through action, not just words.  Headquartered in London – one of the most multicultural cities in the world – and with offices in Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Dublin, and Manchester, we’re proud to reflect the diversity of the communities around us.  Equity is a year-round commitment, and real change means embedding inclusion into every decision, every day – a commitment we’re proud to uphold.
